why are you doing this to me, favre?

this one kills me. pretty much a no win for me no matter what. i wanted and expected him to come back, so it hurt when he retired. i got over it and embraced rodgers. but to know he wanted to come back, or at least was really on the fence about it, and to have him now say he regrets retiring and wants to play, it's killing me. if he plays somewhere else, i'm going to have a hard time with that. i hope he does show up at camp.

it seems strange now, but i honestly think that if favre keeps this up, he'll be back as the starter. he called ted's bluff. at this point it would actually be less logical to pass on him and go with rodgers.

preseason starts soon. i can't wait.

9:16 am - recent thoughts
ok, here's a digest version of what's been on my mind:

1 - favre returns.

i think this is bullshit. i don't think he'll come back and the story is overblown. is he does come back and play for a different team, then according to my own philosophy, he'll be dead to me.

2 - wall - e

amazing. i agree it could be up for best picture.

3 - nadal v federer

this was an amazing match, maybe best ever. bummer it went to nadal, that ass-picker.

4 - worlds best prom

heard about this on a rerun of this american life that was about proms and featured a story on the post-prom in racine. on a side note, the TAL segment kind of sucked. i'm starting to get sick of their glib, almost bored reading of stories but this is cool:
worlds best prom:

5 - meat is murder/full metal jacket

also, i got this:

6 - brewers

i like where they're at in the standings. certainly in there for a wild card bid, but not getting too much attention. they're just moving along, winning all over the place. also, they're closing the gap on the cubs and have a serious chance of taking the division. especially now with sabathia coming on board. however, i'm really just biding my time until football season is back. first preseason on aug 11.

he was already my fav brewer anyway (after turnbow, whom i love just for his insistance on not bending the brim of his hat, and who had his first save last night in a year), but now that's he's veg there is no better. two bombs last night. awesome.

on a tangent thought, i've discovered it's very hard to get a tauscher jersey from the packers. maybe i'll get hawk.

6:47 pm - football
so now i can finally talk about the end of the season without getting wistful. i needed some time after the title game and i needed the super bowl to be over, and now i can move on.

re: packers
pre-season i thought they'd have a winning season, something in the 9-7 or 10-6 area. i figured they'd have a shot at the playoffs, maybe wild card. by week three i was a believer, predicting 13-3 at least and a good shot in the playoffs. maybe if they'd had a closer game against the seahawks, i would have taken the giants loss better. i won't analyze the game because it's been done. sufficed to say, it hurt. i don't think i'm going to live as long as i was originally going to. it took something from my soul. as soon as the ball was through the uprights, my tv was off, as i refused to watch any other team receive the trophy in lambeau. i didn't think about it or talk about it for at least a week. i do plan on getting a tauscher jersey. he's my hero.

the reality is, they're a young team who surprised everyone. there's no reason to think they won't be better next year. as favre said, maybe 14-2? i expect them to make the playoffs one way or another. i don't see the rest of nfc north being any good next year, so probably they'll take the division. and i don't anticipate any surprises from the other divisions, so they should seed high. i think the cowboys won't be as good next year, since their coaching staff is getting dismantled. should be a good year. plus 2 of the hardest games in 08 (colts, cowboys) will be at home with only the jaguars to face away.

re: super bowl
i couldn't support the patriots or the giants. i successfully attempted to observe the game as simply a contest of athletics at the highest level. i was not disapointed. only a momentary pang of regret that it wasn't the packers who were taking advantage of the pat's choke. the giants played well and earned what they achieved, but i don't believe in them. i don't expect them to be great next year. they took advantage of what the cowboys, packers and pats gave them. i do hope that the trend of the super bowl runner up not making the playoffs the following year continues. also, tom petty was pretty cool.

i'll try and watch the pro bowl a little next week just to see favre playing and having a good time, then i can lay 07 to rest.

ok, the brewers are done so let's focus on the packers, who've managed to get through september 4-0. honestly at this point, only a couple of teams look serious (afc: colts, patriots, maybe steelers; nfc: cowboys, packers, maybe lions and seattle looks good). that said, the only teams who fall on the packers schedule are the lions and the cowboys. the lions on thanksgiving day is always scary, but i like the packers against them to close out the season at home. i think the cowboys game will be good. it'll be close, a shootout. the bears are over, which makes me happy. the vikings could hang in there, but they're just not good right now. we won't be able to see how serious the lions are until the packers play them, since they have a relaxed schedule as well. bottom line: packers make the playoffs. after that, anything goes. and yes, the running game isn't there, but who cares? they have so many other options, it doesn't even matter.

oh yeah, and there was the td record. at the metrodome. i think it was better than at lambeau. they had to pause the game and play the big video of marino. it was awesome.

when the packers were stopped on 4th and goal after attempting a pass, all i could think about was last year when they lost to the bills with a similar move. they totally redeemed themselves a few minutes later, of course.

i was looking ahead at the schedule, and, assuming teams continue playing at their current levels, the packers could conceivably go 13-3 (possible losses to bearsx2 and cowboys, but i think they'd have a good chance against the bears as well, so maybe 15-1?!?). i think more realistically will be 10-6, with a very real shot at the playoffs. i went into this season thinking the defense was the asset and the offense was the question, but the offense has looked great in the last two games, improving each week. the defense is doing well, but there's still some questions there, i think. of course, the chargers have some serious threats on offense, so you can't be too critical.

anyway, that's all i got.

ps i'm with cody. you can follow the brewers, but sunday is packers. looks like the packers are better anyway.

edit:
after the bears game last night, i improve the packers to 12-4, with 15-1 still possible. man does grossman suck. but i've been saying that for a year now. the packers decisively lead the nfc north and are the only unbeaten nfc team.

michael and i ran the chicago half marathon yesterday. that's 13.1 miles for those of you who don't know. they shut down lakeshore dr and we ran from the museum of science and industry down and back in a loop. of the 10118 finishers (12500 people signed up in total), we took 4985 and 4986 overall with a finish time of 2:11:56. we were shooting for 2 hours even. michael would have finished higher, but he stayed back at my pace. plus i had to stop at every water station as well as stop and stretch a few times. it should also be noted, however, that i was running on a damaged right pinky toe (broken?) and a bum knee. that, and i don't like pain, which i think you have to like in order to do things like this. the last mile was harsh. but i didn't actually feel any specific pain until we stopped running, so here's a breakdown of what i went through after that:
first, the bottoms of my feet hurt
then, my thighs started in
i realized i didn't have a lot of energy left to move
i felt better after a warm shower
waves of aches throughout body while we went to eat
rested in the car
knees killed when i got out of the car and tried to walk
knees were the biggie the rest of the night
woke up with pain in calves, knees were fine
stretched and now it's only slight aches here and there

so now the question will be: keep running? i had set a goal of running the sytennde mai next may (20 miles uphill) but i would also like to do a full marathon at some point. we'll have to see how my knee is i suppose. either way, i think i'm going to take up cycling more. running is more for accomplishment, cycling is just fun.

8:12 am - this is why i love youtube

this was the 80s movie intro on hbo. when it came on i would lay on my stomach and pretend i was flying.

in other news, i totally slammed my foot into a wall yesterday and now my right pinky toe is black. i can walk on it ok, but i wonder if i'll be able to run a half marathon on the 9th. i think so.

also, you know everything you've heard about how awesome superbad is? it's all true.

12:17 pm - running/packers/wes anderson
so michael stopped by on his motorcycle yesterday so that we could train for the half marathon we're doing. it occurred to me that i had intended to keep up with posts concerning my running progress, but i haven't at all. maybe some of you thought i stopped. anyway, here's an update with that:
training with michael
we ran 8.5 miles yesterday
chicago half marathon (13.1 miles) in three weeks
syttende mai run next may (20 miles)
still maintaining 8-9 minute mile
not using the ipod anymore, better to just run

the run yesterday was awful. michael had to ride from western part of the state and didn't get here until around noon. therefore, we went running with the sun right overhead. the path was all country roads with no shade. combine that with the fact that we forgot sunscreen and you get the idea. still felt good, though. capped it off with a swim at the swimming hole and some raw style pasta.

in other news, football season is starting. as much as i support the brewers and appreciate baseball, i'm really a football/packers fan. they looked good last saturday. it would have been nice if the 1st team could have got something going or had longer to create some momentum, but they'll have more opportunity in weeks to come. 2nd team looked great. actually renewed some excitement for rodgers.

finally, we have this to look forward to this fall:
